What you need to host

  1. 1 A private space for a volunteer such as a spare room, annexe, caravan or glamping pod.
  2. 2 A list of help needed; we find a varied list works best.
  3. 3 Meals, or kitchen access; either works, as long as you say which.

We needed a dog-sitter for a last minute 5 day trip away, and we saw this volunteer had looked after animals before - She was so good with Ruben, and sent us whatsapp pics all the time and took him on some incredible walks, making sure he was kept out of the heat of the day. And the house was immaculate on our return! Would love to have her back.

Silke was a fantastic volunteer and a real pleasure to have with us. She got stuck into every task with enthusiasm and a positive attitude, which made life so much easier. Thanks to her hard work, I was finally able to get on top of many of the jobs that had been on my to-do list for far too long, and I now feel much more on track. Silke was reliable, hardworking, and always willing to help wherever needed. She fitted in brilliantly and approached every task with care and a smile. We really enjoyed having her here and would happily recommend her to any future host and would definetly host another volunteer

Tim and Bev are friendly, and welcoming. The tasks are explained clearly and manageable. It was a great experience living in a vineyard with those baby grapes.

FAQs

See our Frequently Asked Questions to answer anything you want to know about how work-for-accommodation works, and whether it's the right fit for you.

You can ask for help with a wide range of tasks including gardening, animal care, property maintenance, painting, DIY projects, harvest assistance, conservation work, and more. The key is to clearly describe the tasks in your listing so volunteers know what to expect.

The best exchanges are those where expectations are clear from the start. Typically, volunteers work around 3 hours per day in exchange for accommodation. Be specific about tasks, working hours, and what's included to ensure a mutually beneficial arrangement.

This depends entirely on your accommodation and the scope of your projects. Some hosts welcome individual travellers, while others can accommodate couples or small groups. Consider your available space and how many people you can comfortably manage.

This varies by host. Some provide meals as part of the exchange, while others offer kitchen access so volunteers can prepare their own food. Be clear in your listing about what's included so there are no surprises.

Clear communication is key. Set expectations upfront about tasks and quality. If issues arise, address them directly with the volunteer. Our platform also has a review system to help maintain standards and accountability on both sides.
