FarFrom

Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQs

FarFrom is a platform that connects travellers with hosts who offer volunteering experiences with accommodation, for help with tasks like gardening, DIY, animal care, and more. It's a great way to travel, learn new skills, and experience local cultures without spending money on accommodation.

FarFrom allows you to create a profile as a traveller or host. As a traveller, you can search for placements based on the work you're interested in and the location you want to visit. Hosts list tasks they need help with and information about their accommodation/ meals provided. Simply apply to placements, communicate with hosts, and arrange the details!

The work varies based on what the host needs help with. Common tasks include gardening, house painting, animal care, cleaning, helping with home renovations, eco-projects, and sometimes even assisting with the host's business. Each listing will specify the type of work expected.

Yes, as a traveller, you can browse listings by location, accommodation type and the type of work you want to do. Whether you're looking for a farm stay, helping with renovations, or supporting environmental initiatives, FarFrom allows you to choose placements that match your interests and travel plans.

Currently, yes — FarFrom is focused on the UK. All listings on the platform are UK-based properties. For overseas hosts, please get in touch with us to join our growing waitlist of hosts outside of the UK.

Either party can end a placement early if things aren't working out or if unforeseen circumstances arise which means you need to end the exchange early. We'd encourage both parties to communicate directly first, and to contact us at hello@farfromtravel.com if support is needed.

Yes, volunteers and hosts can message through our site before booking. This helps to answer any questions or confirm any details that are important to know before you book with each other.

FarFrom currently only has UK hosts but has plans to expand internationally, please reach out to us if you would like to host with us in your country.

FarFrom takes safety seriously and encourages clear communication between travellers and hosts. We recommend that both parties have an initial conversation, perhaps via video chat, to get to know each other before committing. Always trust your instincts and don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any concerns.

Host FAQs

Free hosting is available to registered charities, Community Interest Companies (CICs), and unregistered community groups based in the UK. If your organisation has a registered charity number, you can sign up and get started straight away. We verify registered charities automatically during sign-up using the Charity Commission (England and Wales) and OSCR (Scotland) registers. If you're a CIC or an unregistered community group, sign up as a host and then get in touch with us. We'll review your organisation and approve your account once we've confirmed your status — you'll know within 48 hours if you're eligible for a free host account. Not sure whether your organisation qualifies? Get in touch with us and we'll let you know.

FarFrom is a platform that helps hosts find volunteers looking to exchange their time and skills and have an immersive voluntary experience. As a host, you can list what help you need and what kind of experience you're offering. Travellers apply through the site, and you choose who to welcome based on what suits your needs.

You can ask for help with tasks you wouldn't typically hire professional staff for around your property or business. FarFrom can help with a wide range of tasks like gardening, animal care, DIY, house renovations, housekeeping, eco projects, digital support, and more.

You don't have to provide meals, it's all up to you. However, it's a nice gesture and often appreciated by travellers. Some hosts offer shared meals, others provide basic ingredients, and some simply give access to a kitchen. Just be clear in your listing about what's included so everyone knows what to expect.

Hosts that are upfront about the experience they're offering to volunteers is the ultimate way to ensure you have the best experience as the volunteers know what to expect, and they arrive already ready for the experience ahead.

FarFrom doesn't provide insurance for placements at this time, but we're in discussions with insurance providers to be able to deliver this through our platform. We recommend you contact your existing home, property, or business insurer, and let them know you'll be hosting volunteers. Some policies will cover this automatically; others may not. You're responsible for ensuring your insurance is appropriate for the activities volunteers will be involved in.

Yes. Their profile will include information about who they are, their work and travel experience, and where they are from. If there is anything missing from the profile that will help your decision, just send the volunteer a message through the platform. You're never obligated to accept anyone.

Light hand tools are generally fine where there's a clear and safe task involved, such as gardening tools and basic maintenance equipment. Volunteers must not operate heavy machinery, hazardous equipment, or power tools that require training or professional qualifications. If you're unsure about a specific task, don't include it.

You control your availability through your listing. This makes FarFrom suitable for seasonal arrangements, if you only want volunteers during spring or summer, or around a specific project, that's completely fine. Just make sure your listing reflects your availability accurately so volunteers aren't applying for dates you can't offer.

Every listing on FarFrom must offer private accommodation — that means a private sleeping space and access to a bathroom. Shared bedrooms (with your household or volunteers who they have never met before) are not eligible. There is also an option for you to give space for campervans to pitch up on your site, and share your facilities like kitchen and bathroom. Beyond that, accommodation needs to be safe, habitable, and honestly represented in your listing.

Yes, your listing is yours to set up and manage. You choose how to describe your property, what tasks you're offering, what accommodation is available, and your availability. We ask that everything is honest and accurate.

You'll be able to review each traveller's profile, experience, skills, and feedback from other hosts (once reviews are active). We also recommend video calls before confirming to make sure there's a good fit on both sides.

We encourage clear communication from the start, including written agreements on what's expected. If something isn't working out, you can end the placement early. We have help guides and a support team to help resolve issues where possible.

Yes, you can! Many hosts welcome more than one traveller at a time — it can be a great way to get more help and create a fun, social atmosphere. Just make sure you have enough space and resources to host them comfortably, and be clear in your listing about how many people you can accommodate.

If a volunteer contacts you directly via email, social media, or any other channel, we'd ask you to redirect them to apply through FarFrom. All placements need to go through the platform to ensure both parties are protected. We can't assist with bookings made outside FarFrom, and this will leave both you and the volunteer without the safeguards that come with a confirmed booking. You also won't be able to leave a review for the volunteer or receive one yourself without a booking confirmed through the platform. If you're unsure how someone found your contact details, feel free to get in touch with us.

Send them a friendly nudge to complete the booking through the platform. Until a booking request is confirmed, the dates aren't secured and either party can change plans without notice. Without a confirmed booking, neither you nor the volunteer will be able to leave a review. We'd recommend not making any firm arrangements such as preparing accommodation or turning away other applicants until the booking is confirmed.

Volunteer FAQs

Tasks vary depending on the host, but can include gardening, painting, helping with animals, general maintenance, housekeeping, or even creative projects. You'll see a description in each listing, and you can ask questions before you commit.

Once you've found a placement you're interested in, you can contact the host directly through the FarFrom platform. Make sure to ask any questions you may have about the tasks, accommodation, or other details before confirming your booking.

Sometimes! Some hosts provide meals or groceries, others just offer access to a kitchen. It varies, so always check the listing carefully and feel free to ask questions before confirming.

Many hosts are open to couples or friends applying together, especially if there's enough space and work to share. Just make sure to mention this when you message the host, and look for listings that say they accept more than one traveller.

Each host sets their own timeframe; some welcome travellers for just a week, others prefer longer stays. The length of stay will be listed, and you can discuss flexibility directly with the host.

You are responsible for checking visa rules for the country you're travelling to. Some countries have restrictions on volunteering or unpaid work — make sure your visa status is appropriate before you go.

Each host sets their own expectations and it's always flexible. Most hosts ask for around 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. You'll always get time off to explore and relax. Check each listing for the exact details before applying.

All hosts create profiles and are encouraged to add clear details and photos. As the community grows, we'll introduce reviews and ratings to help build trust. Until then, we recommend asking lots of questions and arranging a video call before you go.

Travelling always carries a bit of unpredictability. If something isn't right, speak to your host first, most issues can be solved with good communication. If not, you're free to leave the placement, though we ask everyone to act respectfully and responsibly.

While most FarFrom placements go ahead as planned, sometimes unexpected things come up and a host may need to cancel. We know that can be frustrating, but it's important to understand that hosts are not responsible for finding you alternative accommodation or arranging a new placement. We recommend all travellers keep some backup funds or a flexible plan in case things change last minute. FarFrom will do our best to support you and help you find a new placement if needed, but we can't guarantee an immediate replacement.

While each host might provide different details, it's important to bring essentials like your personal hygiene items, clothing suited for the tasks you'll be doing (like work gloves or boots), and any specific items requested by the host.

If you need to cancel a placement, it's best to give as much notice as possible. Hosts rely on travellers to help with their projects, and last-minute cancellations can cause disruption. Be sure to communicate openly about any changes to your plans.

While experience in certain areas (like gardening or animal care) may be helpful, it's not usually required. Hosts often appreciate enthusiasm, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn. Be sure to read the listing to understand any skills or experience the host is looking for.

Yes. FarFrom doesn't provide insurance for volunteers, but we're working on it! You're responsible for any insurance you think is appropriate for your trip — whether that's travel insurance, health cover, or personal liability. We'd strongly recommend taking out travel insurance before any placement, just as you would for any UK trip.

The small, one-off fee you pay when confirming a placement covers host vetting, platform support, and the infrastructure that keeps FarFrom safer and more reliable than the alternatives. It's not paid to the host, it's a booking fee directly to us. Your accommodation is provided as part of the exchange itself. To put it in perspective: one fee covers your entire stay, whether that's a long weekend or a fortnight. For what you're getting, a vetted host, a private room, and a genuine cultural exchange, it's hard to find better value anywhere.

This depends on the host. Some properties are set up to accommodate volunteers who bring their own transport and accommodation, particularly larger rural sites or glamping properties with suitable land. It's worth asking the host directly before applying. The listing will usually indicate if this is possible.

Hosts will see your volunteer profile once you apply, this includes the information you've provided about yourself, your experience, availability, and what you're looking for from a placement. Your full contact details are not shared until a placement is confirmed.

To volunteer for a host you have to be over 18 years of age or older on the FarFrom platform.

FarFrom has an inventory of hosts all across the UK. All you need to do is create a volunteer account for free and apply to the hosts you want to stay with. Some hosts can accept you to stay for 4-5 days and some will allow stays for up to 2 months.

FarFrom is based on a non-monetary exchange. We are a platform to help people exchange their skills for accommodation, we are not an employment website. You offer your time and help in return for a place to stay, and sometimes meals or other perks. It's not a paid job, and shouldn't replace professional employment. There are no obligations of productivity and no pay.
